❝ She slept with wolves without fear, for the wolves knew a lion was among them.❞

BIO
The bristling tooth and fang of Princess Mononoke meet the harsh, bleak landscape of the mountainous steppe in this verse. Ashol is the daughter of a chieftain and his wife, who were both captured and sold into slavery by European colonists. She is not a survivor of genocide, but a bright and passionate child who grows into a heralded warrior intent on taking back the land of her people. She has a wolf companion named Khan.
In contrast to Kismet’s journey - moving past grief and trying to find a sense of identity long lost - Ashol's story is about excitement, exploration, growth, and the fight for the future - because she knows who she is and always has. Ashol’s people believe that wolves are spirits of ancestral unrest: souls, if you will, that cannot move on to the afterlife because they’re angry at the those who have plundered their land and taken away their home. Ashol channels their anger through her relationship with the wolves, and is a vehicle for their anger and unrest. |
